Toxins (Botox/Dysport) are used to soften the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscles so that the appearance of the wrinkles in the affected area begin to diminish.
Dermal fillers (Restylane, Juvéderm) do not paralyze the area. They are injected under the surface of the skin delivering volume which plumps up the skin, smoothing out the wrinkle or fold. There are several types of materials used such as hyaluronic acid (HA), which completely degrade over a period of a few months and are resorbed into the body. An alternative filler is autologous fat, which can be aspirated in a sterile fashion and transferred to those areas that need volume supplementation for facial rejuvenation.
