Many cultures think of the hymen as the social marker of virginity. Bleeding typically occurs when then hymen tears which is the woman’s first experience with intercourse. However, the hymen can also tear with the use of a tampon and during sports.

Hymenoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure to repair or reconstruct the skin membrane partially covering the vaginal opening. The hymenoplasty will approximate the tissue back together to restore a “virgin like” quality. The procedure usually takes less than an hour. It is done as an outpatient patient and most patients may return to work the next day or so. The patient’s records are kept totally confidential.

Some women even decide to proceed to the next step and redesign the entire look of the vaginal area. Some will enhance the look of the vaginal area by having the skin around the vagina made more even. Some women will have the vaginal muscles tightened and some will desire to even out the look of the labia.
